In April 1970, John returned to the United States from the Philippines for the last time. He graduated from Cloudcroft High School in 1971 then attend Eastern New Mexico University at Roswell later that fall. This marked the beginning of his involvement in Civil rights, the student movement and the fight for the disenfranchised and those held back by poverty. On campus, John was an outstanding student leader. He was overwhelmingly elected President of the Freshman Class, founded the Afro-Student Union and became its 1st President. John was one of the 9 council members of AMAS, The Associated Mexican American Students and the 1st non-Latino on the Council. RETURN
